Hmm not many posts since Fano but I have been so busy having being asked by BC Garns of Denmark to design a winter 2012 range for them ,so that has kept me occupied as well as my felting .

Another thing which has been on my horizon for awhile but now I am to grips with getting it out there is Double Knitting –go over to my new web site on this subject for explanations.

I will be teaching this again in Fano 2013 and have anew book coming out on the subject Tumbleblocks Shawl is reversible dual colour double knitting

This pattern is on Ravelry now

Also the Cowl Chevrons and stripes now this pattern is again two sided fabric but is a differing design each side using  the same dual colouring.

This pattern is here on Ravelry

What a journey and what fabulous place to be heading for ,I am now on the ferry and women are here knitting beautiful intricate pieces of knitting as they head for the island where 6000 are expected and we have 1100 booked on lessons of all descriptions .

I am feeling very pensive but excited as the boat leaves Esjberg and approaches the island .

Nigel opened the door to our lovely cottage and the welcome note on the door said it all.We attended fabulous fashion show with the clothes from DUODO which were lovely machine knitted pieces very funky but elegant

A lovely snack and off to bed to be bright and early tomorrow for my class.

the design drawers in the mill held lots of treasures.and you can see the hotel I stayed in on the 2nd night of my travels and I arrived at an old hunting lodge in the far North of Germany it was built in 1581 and incredible remember it was hunting lodge as you watch the show

This beautiful tiled floor was in the museum  the image does not do it justice.

Moving on from the main mill we were taken to the spinning mill and now a design centre and gallery

2 artists have work here and both are thought provoking in their differing ways

the 1st is by a British artist

The 2nd by aPolish lady who has lived through 2 world wars

When you think of knitting festivals no doubt your mind goes to Woolfest or to Stitches certainly not to a small island off the Danish coast where in 1 weekend 6000 women arrived and 1100 were booked into classes.
I left on my long car journey to Denmark and my 1st nights stay in I sselburg worth was delightful hotel with beautiful garden
and my evening meal was delightful and I waslooking forward to getting to Bocholt for my birthday and the museum there.

The  carder a very familiar site in a woollen mill  but this is a cotton mill using cotton from America and weaving for Europe .

the inside of a mill worker cottage could have been a home in that era in England. This cot was so sweet wonder where those babies are now that slept in this.

I miss my chapel and my hills and the stream etc, does it miss me I wonder?

Is it not possible that a place could have a huge affection for those who dwell there? Perhaps your place loves having you there. It misses you when you are away and in its secret way rejoices when you return. Could it be possible that a landscape might have a deep friendship with you? That it could feel your presence and feel the care you extend towards it? Perhaps your favorite place feels proud of you…” – John O’Donohue (in his book Beauty)

Soon soon

For me it has been a dreadful week concerning my work and responsibilities.I rent my home here in Normanton and do expect my landlord to be a responsible person in maintaining its fabric.

Hmm not so a small damp patch reported last year and being told ‘do not worry’ it is a guttering problem now sorted ,one tends to believe in the word.

Imagine my horror a few weeks ago to return here after being in Teesdale to discover all my desk covered in water, paperwork, my design books, sketch books, silks, threads all soaked, some things dry some do not.

So last week planning to be away and seeing no more water being assured it must be ‘a fluke’ I moved my precious thingsUNDERNEATH my desk, for additional safety,a new pile of silks on the desk ready to be steamed and go into felted items and the next design ideas.

I return home to find my desk swimming in water all notebooks at the back soaked all ruined .I start to clear up and so thankfull I moved a lot of stuff,I see water dripping from my ceiling,I contact my landlord the builder comes he cannot see what is wrong and shakes his head—insisting that this is important he sends for the roofer.

Whilst clearing my desk and the getting all my books out of this room I decide to move the desk away from the drip and the window –good move thought I .Imagine my horror when after moving the desk I discover everything under it soaked and I mean dripping wet and a soaked carpet etc a box of silks and threads not only wet but mouldy and a disintegrating cardboard box slow realisation that this is not a new problem but must have been happening awhile but how can the floor be so wet,I move the curtains now I can get to them to see a nice cracked wall behind and water running down straight under my desk.

The work continues as I discover more ruined things ,my beloved sock machine which I restored starting to rust on the metal parts –more work.Paper patterns just un-restorable,ever tried separating tissue when wet–impossible  dry it- it sticks together.

To cut along story short the roofers find the problem of a huge hole in the felting and tell my landlord the whole roof really needs doing it is all very bad.Well did he do it all ,No just patch it he said .

I have all my rooms under that roof and now feel threatened by nature because when it rains water can get in my home.

We record our design  ideas and our work and when it is ruined we feel a part of us has been stolen.I cannot replace these things I can carry on working and produce better work but I feel sad and disillusioned  with my landlord .I have nurtured this piece of land and made beautiful gardens around this cottage  and now I have to go earlier than I planned, because he does not take his responsibilities seriously.

So how can we value our ruined work –it is hard enough pricing good work so how do you start to value so much lost.

How do you price that you have had your faith in human nature chipped away .

Should we smile and move on and decide once again ”lesson learnt’

I cannot wait to go all the time to my beloved restored chapel which we have restored so carefully and with respect ‘done a proper job’

We need rain so badly in Britain but I hope it hold off until I move all my things.

What price ART.

Just love this and it made me laugh

I have had an image in my head that I wished to execute in my knitting and it has taken me 3 days to get to grips with the correct dimensions and shapings and mesh stitch for my cowl.Working on the premise thatI want the stitches to knit vertical not slant too much but have the notion if you prevent the spread whilst you increase at the centre stitch to your panel then the centre will protrude.

When you look at my initial attempts it is getting there but not what I wanted really

here is an early attempt

messing about with 3dimensions and shaping which fascinate me at the moment,I want lumps and bumps it is just getting them in the right place for the right piece of knitting

Differing yarns give such differing shapes it is a fun discovery journey, try it .
